We all know the famous song from the Mary Poppins movie ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’. This song starts off with a short lesson. Mary Poppins tells us to have fun in life. She tells us to enjoy everything we do in life and make it fun, especially when on first sight it’s no fun at all. Because when it’s a game, every taks becomes a piece of cake.
In every job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job’s a game
And every task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! Aspree!
It’s very clear to me
We know this tactic worked for the children on Cherry Tree Lane in London, but would this be applicable in real life? Would this be applicable to us?
It makes you creative
According to design researchers this would most definitely apply. A researcher from the University of Minnesota recently explained to me that you can be more creative when you see a task as a game rather than seeing it as work. It’s the way you describe the task that changes the conditions, however the task stays the same. But what does this mean for us?
First of all, it ‘s fun! For me this is a very important part of life. For example; doing chores from 9 to 5 sounds boring. However, when I describe it as brainstorming, conducting interviews or presenting, that sound way better to me. It’s the same thing, it’s work, but approached from a different perspective. Off course this is more difficult when you are less able to do the things you like, but according to Mary Poppins, that is exactly when you should apply this technique.
You generate ideas
And that’s because, secondly, being creative opens up your mind to a lot of new and different ideas. So if you’re not happy, being creative can help you change that. Start enjoying what you do. When you set goals and are on the path achieving them, then even the bad chores you have to do to get there, have a small element of fun! Set these goals, stay positive and have fun.
Finally, you are better at applying an amazing skill set: making associations, linking and combining information and thinking ‘out of the box’. This can help you cope with uncertainty or difficult situations in life. You are able to find a creative solution, a better way. Most probably one you didn’t think of before.
Unlock the power!
So would a spoonful of sugar help when it comes to everyday life? To me it absolutely does! And I believe it can also work for you. This doesn’t mean that everything you do is always fun and games, is also doesn’t mean that you need to be happy 24/7. What is does mean is that you yourself can add a bit of fun to something and in doing so, you unlock the amazing powers of creativity! And this helps the medicine go down, in a most delightful way. Isn’t that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious 😉
